There’s an important distinction between magnesium naturally found in food and concentrated magnesium from supplements.
Magnesium occurs naturally in foods such as:
- Nuts and seeds
- Beans and other legumes
- Whole grains
- Leafy green vegetables
- Fortified cereals
- Milk and some dairy products
For healthy people, magnesium naturally present in food is generally not considered a problem because the kidneys can remove excess amounts.
The concern is primarily with excessive amounts from supplements and magnesium-containing medications.
