1. Start With a Proper Wash
The first step is also the most important: check the care label.
Not every pillow can be washed in a washing machine. Solid memory-foam and some latex pillows generally require spot cleaning rather than machine washing, while many down, feather, and synthetic-filled pillows can be washed when the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
For a washable pillow:
- Remove the pillowcase and protector.
- Treat any heavily stained areas first.
- Wash according to the care label.
- Use an appropriate laundry detergent.
- Add an extra rinse if your machine allows it.
- Dry the pillow completely before using it again.
If you’re washing two similar pillows, doing them together can help keep the washing machine balanced.
