How to wash yellowed pillows: 3 tips to keep them white and like new

1. Start With a Proper Wash

The first step is also the most important: check the care label.

Not every pillow can be washed in a washing machine. Solid memory-foam and some latex pillows generally require spot cleaning rather than machine washing, while many down, feather, and synthetic-filled pillows can be washed when the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.

For a washable pillow:

  1. Remove the pillowcase and protector.
  2. Treat any heavily stained areas first.
  3. Wash according to the care label.
  4. Use an appropriate laundry detergent.
  5. Add an extra rinse if your machine allows it.
  6. Dry the pillow completely before using it again.

If you’re washing two similar pillows, doing them together can help keep the washing machine balanced.
