1. They Only Call When They Need Something
One of the clearest warning signs is a friendship that feels one-sided.
They suddenly appear when they need a favor, advice, money, a ride, information, or emotional support. But when you need something, they are nowhere to be found.
A genuine friendship isn’t necessarily perfectly balanced every day, but both people should make an effort over time.
2. They Disappear When You’re Struggling
Pay attention to what happens when life becomes difficult.
A fake friend may be enthusiastic when everything is fun but mysteriously unavailable when you need emotional support.
Real friends don’t have to solve your problems. Sometimes simply checking in or listening can mean a lot.
3. They Can’t Celebrate Your Success
Your achievements should make a good friend happy.
But a fake friend may become uncomfortable, jealous, dismissive, or strangely competitive whenever something good happens to you.
Instead of saying, “I’m happy for you,” they might immediately compare your success with their own life or find a reason to minimize what you’ve accomplished.
