Why Some Travelers Keep the Bathroom Light On When Sleeping in a Hotel

What About Hotel Emergencies?

A little ambient light may also make it easier to orient yourself if you need to move around quickly.

However, the bathroom light shouldn’t be considered a substitute for knowing the hotel’s emergency exits.

When checking into an unfamiliar hotel, take a moment to identify the exit route and keep the area around your bed free of obstacles.

The light is simply an additional convenience.

Does Leaving the Light On Keep Bugs Away?

You may see claims online that leaving a bathroom light on will keep insects or other pests away.

That’s not something you should rely on.

Different insects respond differently to light. Some are attracted to it rather than repelled by it.

So if your goal is a better night’s sleep, don’t leave a light on because you expect it to prevent pests.

What About Security?

Another popular claim is that leaving a light on makes a hotel room look occupied and therefore discourages intruders.

While lights can sometimes create an appearance of activity, there’s no reason to treat a bathroom light as a reliable security measure.

For actual hotel-room security, use the door lock and any available security features, and follow the hotel’s safety instructions.
