Why Some Travelers Keep the Bathroom Light On When Sleeping in a Hotel

Luggage, shoes, charging cables, and furniture can become obstacles in the darkness.

A small amount of light can make these objects easier to spot.

Sleep experts also recommend keeping the route between the bed and bathroom clear and using a dim night-light when necessary for nighttime navigation.

You Don’t Need a Bright Light

There’s an important detail, however.

The goal isn’t to illuminate the entire hotel room.

If the bathroom light is extremely bright, it may actually make it harder to sleep.

Light at night can interfere with the body’s normal sleep-wake rhythm, which is why sleep environments are generally recommended to be dark.

A better approach is to leave the bathroom door only slightly open, if that provides enough visibility.

Even better, use a small, dim night-light if the room has one.

It Can Be Helpful When You Wake Up Suddenly

Imagine waking up at 2 a.m.

For a few seconds, you may not remember exactly where you are.

A faint glow from the bathroom can immediately give you a visual reference point.

You can see the direction of the bathroom, identify nearby furniture, and move around without turning on the much brighter bedside or ceiling lights.

This is particularly useful for people who frequently get up during the night.
