This is perhaps the most important lesson.
Many wild plants look remarkably similar to one another.
Two plants can have similar leaves, flowers, or stems while being completely different species.
And some harmless-looking plants can be irritating or toxic.
Never eat, brew, or use an unidentified wild plant simply because a social-media post claims it has health benefits or financial value.
Instead, compare several identifying characteristics:
Leaves:
Look at their shape, arrangement, edges, and texture.
Flowers:
Color, size, number of petals, and flowering pattern can be useful clues.
Stem:
Some plants have smooth stems, while others are hairy, hollow, thorny, or colored differently.
Growing environment:
Whether a plant is growing in dry soil, wet ground, woodland, pavement cracks, or cultivated soil can help narrow down its identity.
