Self-Checkout Machines Aren’t as Blind as They Used to Be
Modern systems can use several layers of verification.
Some systems compare the item’s expected characteristics with what the checkout camera and other sensors observe.
Computer-vision systems, for example, can analyze the products being handled by a shopper and compare them with the items registered at the terminal.
Patent documents also describe systems specifically designed to detect situations where the registered product doesn’t match the product identified by cameras—for example, when a checkout registers “banana” while the system identifies another product.
So the old assumption that “the machine won’t know” is increasingly unreliable.
