It’s Not Actually a Clever Shopping Hack

Videos and social-media posts sometimes present the banana trick as a funny “life hack” for getting expensive groceries for almost nothing.

But there is an important distinction:

Entering the wrong product intentionally to pay less is theft, not a legitimate self-checkout shortcut.

Retailers have increasingly invested in technology designed to detect discrepancies between what a customer registers and what is actually placed on the checkout scale or carried through the checkout area.
