Vinegar contains acetic acid.
When it comes into contact with plant tissue, the acid can damage the leaves and cause them to dry out and turn brown.
This makes vinegar-based sprays particularly useful against small, young weeds.
However, vinegar isn’t necessarily a permanent solution.
According to extension guidance, vinegar generally acts on the plant tissue it contacts and may not kill the root system of established weeds. Some plants can therefore grow back.
What Does Salt Do?
Salt can make a homemade weed-control mixture more aggressive.
It draws moisture from plant tissue and can make it difficult for vegetation to recover.
But this is also where the biggest gardening concern appears.
Salt doesn’t know the difference between a weed and a desirable plant.
