Washing machines are designed to handle laundry loads, not random heavy objects moving around inside the drum.
There Is Another Important Consideration: Noise
An empty plastic bottle bouncing around inside a washing machine can make quite a bit of noise.
It may also repeatedly strike the drum or other clothing.
Even if the machine continues operating normally, there is little reason to introduce unnecessary objects into a high-speed appliance unless you’re confident the experiment is appropriate for your particular machine.
Your Washing Machine Already Does the Hard Work
Modern washing machines are engineered to move clothing through water and detergent efficiently.
The drum’s rotation, water flow, detergent, temperature, and selected wash cycle all work together to remove dirt.
If your clothes aren’t getting clean, adding a bottle probably isn’t the first solution you should try.
Instead, check whether you’re:
- Overloading the machine
- Using too much detergent
- Using too little detergent
- Selecting the wrong wash cycle
- Washing heavily soiled clothing on an unsuitable setting
- Forgetting to clean the machine regularly
These factors can have a much greater effect on washing performance.
What About Delicate Clothing?
Extra objects moving around inside the drum may not be appropriate for delicate garments.
Items made from delicate fabrics can be damaged by unnecessary friction or pressure.
