A Simple Homemade Drink for Constipation: Ingredients, Recipe and What to Know

Constipation can be uncomfortable, especially when you feel bloated, sluggish, or unable to have a regular bowel movement. It’s no surprise that many people look for simple home remedies made with everyday ingredients.

One popular recipe combines lemon, ginger, garlic, onion, turmeric, honey, baking soda, and water. The original recipe suggests drinking a small amount in the morning and claims that it can clear long-standing waste from the digestive system.

However, it’s important to separate the recipe from the stronger health claims surrounding it. There is no good evidence that a homemade drink can remove years of “stuck” stool or old chewing gum from the body.

The Ingredients

According to the original recipe, you need:

  • 1 peeled lemon
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger
  • 1 garlic bulb
  • 1 onion
  • 1 liter of filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey

How to Make the Drink

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Peel the lemon and prepare the ginger, garlic, and onion.

Step 2: Add the Ingredients to a Pot

Pour the water into a pot and add the ginger, garlic, onion, and baking soda.

Step 3: Simmer

Bring the mixture to a boil. Once it reaches a boil, add the turmeric and allow everything to simmer for about 10 minutes.
