The Centuries-Old Tool Woodworkers Still Rely On Today

punch, also known as a nail set, is a small but highly useful hand tool that has remained valuable despite the rise of modern power tools. Commonly used by carpenters, woodworkers, furniture makers, and homeowners, it performs one simple task extremely well: pushing nail heads slightly beneath the surface of wood.

Using a nail punch is straightforward. The pointed end is placed directly against the head of a nail, and the tool is lightly struck with a hammer. This pushes the nail deeper into the wood without repeatedly hitting the surrounding surface with the hammer. The result is greater control and a cleaner finish.

The technique is especially useful when the appearance of the finished project matters. Once the nail has been recessed, the small hole can be filled with wood filler or putty. After drying, the area can be sanded smooth and covered with paint, stain, or another finish, making the nail almost impossible to notice.
