Scientists Confirm Timeline For Earth’s Destruction As Predicted By Elon Musk

Scientists Reveal When Earth Could Become Uninhabitable — And Elon Musk Has Been Warning About It

For years, Elon Musk has argued that humanity should eventually become a multi-planetary civilization. One reason, he says, is that Earth will not remain habitable forever as the Sun gradually grows brighter.

Now, a scientific study has put a much more precise timescale on one part of that distant future. But there is an important detail that viral headlines often leave out: this is not a prediction that Earth will suddenly be destroyed.

Earth Still Has an Incredibly Long Future

According to the research discussed in the original article, scientists used mathematical models and hundreds of thousands of simulations to study how Earth’s atmosphere could change as the Sun becomes progressively brighter.

The study estimated that Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere could remain for roughly 1.08 billion years, with an uncertainty of about 140 million years. Eventually, increasing solar brightness could disrupt Earth’s climate and reduce the conditions needed for oxygen-producing life.

That means this isn’t something humans need to worry about in our lifetimes—or even remotely close to them.

What Happens to the Sun?

The more dramatic part comes much later.

The Sun is currently a middle-aged star. In roughly five billion years, it is expected to enter its red-giant phase after exhausting much of the hydrogen fuel in its core.
