Only Sharp Eyes Will Spot the Pattern: Can You Find the Missing Number?
Some puzzles look like simple math problems, but the real challenge is often noticing what the numbers are actually describing.
This viral brain teaser gives you three figures and asks you to determine the missing number. At first, it may seem natural to count the squares or sections. But that approach leads you in the wrong direction.
Can You Spot the Pattern?
The puzzle gives us:
- A grid = 9
- A plus sign = 1
- A final square-like figure = ?
So what connects the first two answers?
The secret is to look at the points where the lines intersect, rather than the shapes themselves.
The First Figure: 9
The first figure contains 3 vertical lines and 3 horizontal lines.
Every vertical line crosses every horizontal line:
3 × 3 = 9
That gives us the first answer.
The Second Figure: 1
The plus sign contains:
- 1 vertical line
- 1 horizontal line
They cross exactly once:
1 × 1 = 1
Now the pattern becomes much easier to see.
What About the Missing Number?
The final figure contains 2 vertical lines and 2 horizontal lines.
Following exactly the same rule:
2 × 2 = 4
So the missing number is:
4
Why Is This Puzzle So Easy to Get Wrong?
The shapes encourage you to count boxes, corners, or enclosed spaces. Your brain naturally tries to recognize the overall shape instead of examining how the individual lines interact.
