Although baking soda has some beneficial properties, the risks to the facial skin barrier generally outweigh the potential benefits for most people.
Who should avoid applying baking soda to their face?
Avoid this product if you suffer from eczema, rosacea, active inflammatory acne, very dry or dehydrated skin, or if you have a history of sensitivity to skin products. Also avoid using it on broken skin, around the eyes, during pregnancy, or if you have conditions such as diabetes that affect wound healing. If in doubt, consult a qualified dermatologist who can provide personalized advice, which is much safer than a home test.
Precautions if you still decide to proceed:
Despite the above precautions, some people still wish to try a well-controlled version. Follow these essential steps:
Perform a patch test on the inside of your arm or behind your ear 24 hours before applying to your face. Check for any redness, itching, or burning.
Use the smallest amount possible: never more than 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda per application.
