An Outlet Shouldn’t Normally Glow
A standard electrical receptacle doesn’t produce visible light.
If you notice an orange, red, or yellow glow coming from around an outlet—especially when something is plugged into it—it can be a warning sign of an electrical problem.
Possible causes include:
- A loose electrical connection
- Arcing inside the receptacle or electrical box
- An overheated wire or terminal
- A damaged or deteriorating outlet
- A poor connection between the receptacle and wiring
- Heat damage behind the wall plate
Sometimes the appearance can be caused by light reflecting through a gap, but you shouldn’t assume that’s the explanation without checking.
