Why Is This Electrical Outlet Glowing Orange? The Warning You Should Never Ignore

An Outlet Shouldn’t Normally Glow

A standard electrical receptacle doesn’t produce visible light.

If you notice an orange, red, or yellow glow coming from around an outlet—especially when something is plugged into it—it can be a warning sign of an electrical problem.

Possible causes include:

  • A loose electrical connection
  • Arcing inside the receptacle or electrical box
  • An overheated wire or terminal
  • A damaged or deteriorating outlet
  • A poor connection between the receptacle and wiring
  • Heat damage behind the wall plate

Sometimes the appearance can be caused by light reflecting through a gap, but you shouldn’t assume that’s the explanation without checking.
