Stores Have a Reason to Take It Seriously
Self-checkout fraud can become expensive when multiplied across thousands or millions of transactions.
A University of Leicester study cited by the Association for Psychological Science examined one million self-checkout transactions and found evidence of significant losses associated with unscanned or improperly scanned merchandise.
Retailers therefore have strong financial incentives to improve detection.
This is one reason newer self-checkout areas increasingly include cameras, weight sensors, employee monitoring, and software designed to identify suspicious mismatches.
