Be Careful With Abrasive Cleaners
It can be tempting to use a very rough scrubber when ordinary methods don’t work.
But aggressive abrasion can scratch certain cookware surfaces.
Before using steel wool, harsh powders, or strong chemical cleaners, check what material your baking sheet is made from and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
This is particularly important for nonstick-coated pans.
Aluminum Needs Special Attention
Aluminum baking sheets can react with certain cleaning products.
Strong alkaline cleaners may discolor or damage aluminum surfaces.
If you’re cleaning an aluminum pan, choose a method that is appropriate for aluminum rather than assuming that every popular cleaning trick is safe.
Don’t Mix Cleaning Chemicals
This is one rule worth taking seriously.
Never combine household cleaning chemicals unless the product instructions specifically say that doing so is safe.
Some combinations can produce dangerous fumes or chemical reactions.
Simple cleaning methods are usually the better choice.
When It’s Time to Replace the Pan
Cleaning can restore the appearance of many baking sheets, but it can’t repair every problem.
Consider replacing a pan if you notice:
- Peeling or damaged nonstick coating
- Deep corrosion
- Severe warping
- Cracks
- Structural damage
- A surface that can no longer be safely used
A few stains are one thing.
