Finding something crawling through someone’s hair can be alarming.
At first glance, it may look like an ordinary insect. But if the creature is attached to the scalp, moving through the hair, or accompanied by itching, it’s worth taking a closer look.
The important thing is not to panic. Several different things can be mistaken for a “bug” in someone’s hair.
Could It Be Head Lice?
One of the first possibilities people think about is head lice.
Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that live on the human scalp and feed on blood. They are particularly common among school-aged children, but anyone can get them.
Adult head lice are small and can move quickly through the hair, which sometimes makes them difficult to spot.
Another clue is the presence of nits, which are lice eggs attached firmly to individual hairs close to the scalp.
What Do Lice Usually Cause?
The most common symptom is itching, although some people may have lice without immediately experiencing significant itching.
Other possible signs include:
- A crawling or tickling sensation
- Scratching the scalp frequently
- Small red marks from scratching
- Irritation around the scalp or neck
- Tiny eggs firmly attached to individual hairs
- Seeing live insects moving through the hair
However, dandruff and hair-product residue can sometimes be mistaken for nits.
