A dishwasher can save a huge amount of time in the kitchen, but that doesn’t mean everything belongs inside it. The combination of high temperatures, strong water pressure, and powerful detergent can damage certain materials, finishes, and cookware.
Before you load everything into the machine after dinner, take a moment to check these 18 common items.
1. Wooden Utensils
Wooden spoons, cutting boards, and other wooden kitchen tools can absorb moisture and become warped or cracked. Dishwasher detergent can also remove the natural oils that help protect the wood.
Better option: Wash wooden items by hand with mild soap and dry them promptly.
2. Cast-Iron Cookware
A dishwasher can strip away the seasoning that protects cast iron. Once that protective layer is gone, the cookware becomes more vulnerable to rust.
3. Sharp Kitchen Knives
Repeated dishwasher cycles can dull knife blades, while high heat and detergent may affect some handles. Sharp knives can also damage the protective coating on dishwasher racks.
Hand washing is usually the safest choice.
4. Nonstick Pans
Some nonstick cookware is labeled dishwasher-safe, but repeated exposure to heat, detergent, and contact with other dishes can shorten the life of the coating. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Copper Cookware
Copper can lose its attractive finish in the dishwasher. Strong detergents and high temperatures may cause discoloration or surface damage.
