Seeing a snake slither across your yard can be an unsettling surprise, especially when you’re gardening, playing outside, or simply relaxing on the patio. But snakes usually aren’t looking for trouble. They are often attracted by three things: food, water, and places to hide.
The good news is that you can make your property less appealing to them without trying to harm or capture them. Experts generally recommend changing the conditions that attract snakes rather than relying on questionable homemade repellents.
1. Keep the Grass Short
Tall grass gives snakes plenty of cover and can also provide habitat for insects and rodents—the kinds of prey snakes may follow.
Regularly mowing your lawn and trimming weeds can make the area less attractive while also making it easier to spot anything moving through the yard.
2. Remove Woodpiles and Yard Debris
Old boards, piles of branches, leaves, rocks, and unused materials can create cool, sheltered spaces where snakes may hide.
Keep firewood neatly stacked and elevated when possible, and clear away unnecessary debris around sheds, fences, and the house.
3. Deal With Rodents
If mice and rats have easy access to your property, snakes may have a reason to visit.
Store food and animal feed securely, keep garbage containers closed, and address signs of rodent activity. Reducing the available prey can make your yard considerably less attractive to snakes.
