I Found This Plugged Into the Wall at My Airbnb — Is It Really Just a Night Light?
You arrive at your Airbnb, unpack your bags, and notice something unusual plugged directly into a wall outlet. It has no obvious label, no visible switch, and you’re not quite sure what it does.
When you ask the host, they give you a simple explanation: “It’s just a night light.”
But should you take their word for it?
Not Every Small Plug-In Device Is a Night Light
Small electrical devices that plug directly into a wall can serve many purposes. Some are genuinely night lights, while others may be air fresheners, insect repellents, Wi-Fi accessories, motion sensors, USB power adapters, or other types of household equipment.
A night light will generally have some kind of light-emitting component, such as a small LED or bulb, and is designed to provide low-level illumination. However, appearance alone isn’t enough to identify an unfamiliar electrical device.
That’s why a photo, model number, or manufacturer’s label is important before reaching a definite conclusion.
What Should You Look For?
If you encounter an unfamiliar plug-in device, look carefully—without opening or dismantling it—for:
- A brand name or model number
- Safety or certification markings
- A visible LED or light source
- A switch, sensor, or control button
- Printed instructions or symbols
- A USB port or other connection
- Any unusual smell, heat, buzzing, or discoloration
These clues can often reveal what the device is intended to do.
