Loose straps, ribbons, tags, or other objects that stick out from a suitcase can potentially become caught, detached, or interfere with the smooth movement of the bag.
A ribbon that comes loose may also end up separated from the suitcase.
This doesn’t mean every ribbon is dangerous or that airport systems cannot handle them. But from a practical perspective, the fewer loose objects attached to your luggage, the less there is to snag or detach.
Your Suitcase Already Has a Baggage Tag
Airlines and airports rely on baggage tags and tracking information to route luggage.
The barcode or other identification information on the official baggage tag is much more important than a decorative ribbon.
That’s why you shouldn’t rely on a ribbon as your primary way of identifying your suitcase.
Before leaving the check-in counter, make sure your official baggage tag is securely attached and that the information is correct.
A Better Way to Make Your Bag Stand Out
If you want your suitcase to be easy to recognize, consider making the suitcase itself distinctive.
You could choose:
- A bright or unusual suitcase color
- A patterned luggage design
- A durable luggage cover
- A small, securely attached identification tag
- A unique sticker or marking that doesn’t interfere with baggage handling
These options can make your suitcase recognizable without creating a large loose object that could become detached.
